Vauxhall – Opel VX220 – VX220 Turbo

he VX220 was built alongside the Lotus Elise S2. Its design was based on the Elise chassis, modified to accept a GM engine in preference to the Rover K-series engine used by the Elise. It carried the internal model identification Lotus 116 and the code name Lotus Skipton.

The normally aspirated version used a Vauxhall Astra 2.2 L Ecotec L61 engine giving 147 hp in a car weighing 870 kg. The Turbo model, introduced in 2003, used a 2.0 L Ecotec LSJ engine, producing 200 hp but weighing 930 kg. A final version, the track-oriented VXR220, based on the turbo model, was tuned to give around 220 hp. A fantastically fast road and track day car.

Our head will provide up to 175 BHP with 182 ft llb of torque for the normally aspirated engine. As stated elsewhere on this site we don’t publish turbo BHP figures because so much depends on how much boost you use but in excess of 270bhp is easliy attainable from this head (which is a lot from a car this light !!!)

Cost for this head is £950.00 + vat on an exchange basis (Exchange £350) A ‘taping’ service is also available for this head at an additional cost of £100 which will give the final hand finish to the ports and provide a further 1% flow. This price includes valves.


Note : flow diagrams show flow against specific valve openings at 0.050 inch valve openings at 10″ pressure. Therefore actual flow volume increase is measured as the area under the graph (indicated in yellow for inlet and blue for exhaust). Standard valve sizes are used on our heads unless specified as a big valve version. Tests shown here are carried out on a flow bench on a bare head without filters. Therefore the difference between a standard engine with standard inlet ducting and filters will be larger than shown here.
