Ford Essex V6
Owner, Ric Wood’s experience with building and tuning Ford V6 Essex based engines is extensive and impressive. His sucess on the track proves that when it comes to getting the best from the V6 there is simply none better.
When it comes to knowing the Essex V6 head intimately, there is none better. But when it came to trying our standard but modified V6 Essex head on the flow bench and making modifications using the Port Flow Analyzer (and a lot of experienced know how) we were very pleased with the results. This head will make a real difference to any Capri, TVR or kit car owner using this great engine.
Note : flow diagrams show flow against specific valve openings at 0.050 inch valve openings at 10″ pressure. Therefore actual flow volume increase is measured as the area under the graph (indicated in yellow for inlet and blue for exhaust). Standard valve sizes are used on our heads unless specified as a big valve version. Tests shown here are carried out on a flow bench on a bare head without filters. Therefore the difference between a standard engine with standard inlet ducting and filters will be larger than shown here.

Want more than the Iron head can provide ?
Over time Ric realised that there was a finite limit to the performance capability of the original Iron cylinder head.
In the extreme conditions of the race circuit, where an engine spends virtually its whole life at the limit of its performance, tuning the iron head engine over 260 bhp made it potentially unreliable. There are many examples of Essex and Cologne Ford V6 engines producing over 300bhp. But how reliable are they ? Can they last a season or even a race without failure ? This lead him to design a better head which can be used on any Essex engine.
The evolution of this new head started with trying to get more reliable power from the Iron head engine. Setting up the bottom end via choice of bore, stroke, bearings and correct rod ratio for more power quickly showed the poor flow and heat disipation of the iron head. Although the head would take some gas flowing and larger valves it did have a fundamental limit in terms or air-fuel flow and heat capacity. The amount of air and fuel the head can flow is fundamental to the ultimate power an engine can produce. Under extreme race conditions it also showed heat dispation problems that caused hot spots and cracking (mainly when bigger valves are used)
There was only one way forward. Design and build from scratch a cylinder head with the flow and heat disipation characteristics required to reliably produce up to 100 bhp per litre under race conditions.

Cost for this head is £950.00 + vat per head pair on an exchange basis. (£350 exchange). A ‘taping’ service is also available for this head at an additional cost of £100 which will give the final hand finish to the ports and provide a further 1% flow.
